It was an unpredictable and confusing night at the Golden Globe awards. For some reason, the categories were massively jumbled throughout the telecast, jumping back and forth from TV to movie categories as the presenters announced major categories like TV Drama early on long before the actors in the category were announced. It was a bizarre way of doing things and didn’t quite work. Oh well, what would the Golden Globes be without something going wrong?
While many assumed The Irishman, Marriage Story, or Joker would win Best Film Drama at the end of the night, a surprise frontrunner emerged with 1917 taking home the prize. Director Sam Mendes also took home Best Director for the film in a surprising twist. Winning the top prize in Best Picture Musical or Comedy was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film won the most awards of the night with 3 securing Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. Leonardo DiCaprio is getting robbed of any awards recognition this season, unfortunately. Did the voters not see his deleted scene where he sings Green Door? That’s iconic. It’s okay, Leo. I’ll never let go.
In the top acting categories of the night, Joaquin Phoenix took home Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama for Joker. No surprise that he gave a whacky and confusing speech, but I think everyone is used to that with Phoenix by now. As much as I find him to be an incredible actor, I’m not sure I can handle an entire awards season full of his speeches. Maybe I say this because I really wanted Adam Driver to win. Maybe I say it because I felt uncomfortable watching his speech. Watch it for yourself and decide.
Renee Zellweger won Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama for Judy for portraying Judy Garland. It came as no surprise considering the critical acclaim she’s received for the role. Could she be on her way to an Oscar? We’ll see very soon.
Highlights
Tom Hanks Award
Can Tom Hanks just accept an award at every show? Even though he had a cold, he was so professional and kind to everyone. He gave a lovely speech thanking his family and colleagues while accepting the Cecile B. Demille award. He proved why he’s one of the most respected actors in the industry.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
If you’ve looked at my Top 10 of the year list, it’s not shocking that I was excited to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have a good night at the Globes. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were presenting together. The movie was being praised. It was a good time to be a fan. I have to enjoy it while it lasts because my favorite movie of the year never goes on to win the Oscar (well, sometimes it does for two minutes like La La Land in 2017.)
Taron Egerton
The actor took home the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for Rocketman over Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Craig, and Eddie Murphy. Taron has been working hard, and his role as Elton John is one of the year’s best performances. I’m happy to see him rewarded for it. I can’t forget to mention 12-year-old Roman Griffin Davis, who was also nominated in the category for Jojo Rabbit! Roman was in the best mood all night and is such a star!
Awkwafina
The star of The Farewell won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. It’s a bit of an odd category to put her in because the role was a far cry from her comedic roots, but I’m so happy for her! She is excellent in the film and very deserving of awards recognition.
Snubs
Marriage Story
Alright, here’s the deal, everyone. I’m a little stressed about this one aspect of awards season that could potentially derail everything. Marriage Story only got one award last night when it should have gotten at least 3. It could have easily won Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture Drama. Instead, the movie only won for Laura Dern’s Best Supporting Actress performance when Jennifer Lopez should have won the category for Hustlers! What’s going on, Hollywood Foreign Press? No disrespect to Laura Dern because I am a fan. But why are you missing the best parts of Marriage Story? Let’s hope the Oscars don’t do the same.
The Irishman
So, The HFPA made Martin Scorsese sit through that whole show, and he got nothing? The Irishman was a great movie, and there was not one single win. Just tons of dumb jokes about how it’s such a long movie. It seems like Hollywood hates the idea of giving awards to Netflix movies.
Jojo Rabbit
I just want Jojo Rabbit to win something. Screenplay. Set Design. “Best Use of End Credits Music.” I’ll settle for anything at this point. Please give this movie an award.
